TrailAbove
TrailAbove is a Colorado hiking app built around the hike you're planning. It puts the topo map, the trail, and the elevation profile on your phone so they still work at a trailhead with no bars.
In development. Android first, Colorado first. Field testing on real trails now.
Download an area and the map, hillshade, contours, and trails keep working in airplane mode.
Length, elevation gain, and an elevation profile for each trail, checked against what hikers actually record.
Record your hike with the screen off and get live time, distance, pace, and elevation gain, plus a trip summary when you're done.
Planned hikes.
Pick a trail and a date, and TrailAbove downloads that area automatically and refreshes conditions before you leave.
Conditions in one place.
Weather and, where it's permitted, road and avalanche info, each shown with its source and an "as of" time.
Share your plan.
Send your route and return time to someone you trust, who gets a heads-up if you don't check back in.
Every build goes out on Colorado trails before it ships. Recent tests include daily walks in Bear Creek Park in Denver and Ptarmigan Lake near Buena Vista, where the recorded track stayed within a few meters of the trail and the distance matched the Forest Service figure.
TrailAbove is built on open and public data, and credits every source in the app and on the map:
We only use state and agency data, such as trail closures, road conditions, or avalanche forecasts, with the publisher's permission and under its terms. Until then, the app links to the official source rather than copying it.
TrailAbove is built by Justin Wesley, a software developer and hiker in Denver, Colorado.
